Sierra Earns Her Superior Genetics Award

I’m thrilled to announce that SG Cabochon ZZ Sierra Nevada has earned a Superior Genetics designation on her very first lactation. This beautiful and productive doe is a rising star in our herd and has already two Grand Champion legs in the show ring.

We work hard to improve our herd with every new generation and Cabochon Farm now has six Superior Genetics designated does in our breeding program.   Thank you to all of our customers who have made our success possible with their support!

If you’re interested in learning more about our upcoming breedings or to put a reservation on a spring kid, check out our 2019 Kidding Schedule.

The Superior Genetics designation indicates that the animal is in the top 15% (85th percentile ranking or higher) of their breed.  To learn more about the ADGA Superior Genetics program and how the scores are calculated, visit Superior Genetics FAQs.

Showing the Boys in Missouri

Clayton and I spent the Labor Day weekend showing some of the boys at the Boon Companions buck show in Sedalia Missouri. It was our first adventure with our newly acquired trailer – a 42′ toy hauler modified to be a “goat hauler”. The boys did well with Casanova placing first in his class under two judges and Phan Boy and Xylo both taking second in their classes. Unfortunately I didn’t get a photo of Xylo and of course since I was the one behind the camera, no photos of me either which is fine since Clayton is the more photogenic one. 🙂

Casanova captured two first place wins

Phan Boy placed 2nd with comments on his exceptional smoothness of blending

Biscotti placed 4th in a very large class of 13 while being several months younger than most in the class

Clayton won the senior showmanship class with Phan Boy

Two New Champions

Nigerian Dwarf, Cabochon Amanda, wins Grand Champion at Little Falls, MN goat show

We are so very proud of our girls’ performance in the first show of the 2016 season at the Little Falls, MN Goat Show on June 4th.  Both Amanda and Windsong earned a Grand Champion and Stormstruck came home with a Reserve Champion. There was a great turnout for the show with 24 entries in the Nigerian Dwarf Junior show with about the same in the senior show.

It was chilly, rainy day with a stiff wind so the goats were pretty cold and not particularly happy. We had clipped the week ahead of time when the weather looked like it was going to be warm. I’ll have to make a note to leave them fuzzy next year! We waited until the next day to take their pictures so we’d have sunshine for them pose with their ribbons.

In addition to Amanda and Windsong, we brought one other Junior, Josephine, who placed second in her class of six. The poor little thing spent most of her day wrapped up in Clayton’s coat to keep her warm while waiting her turn in the show ring. Really wish I had gotten a photo of that! 🙂

We brought three senior does in milk: Stormstruck, Glory and Taffy. Stormstruck and Glory each placed first in their class under different judges with Stormstruck going on to win Reserve Champion and Taffy placing second in her class of yearling milkers.

Champagne Debuts as Grand Champion

Clayton's First Grand Champion Win

We started off the show season with a bang this year as our newest doeling, Carl B’s OH Sweet Champagne, took home Grand Champion Nigerian Dwarf Junior Doe at the Little Falls, MN Spring Show.  This was a very large three ring show with more than 300 does in attendance and we are very proud of both Champagne and Clayton, whose outstanding showmanship secured his first ADGA grand champion win under judge Ellen Considine.

Nigerian Dwarfs were well represented with 33 Junior does in attendance and about the same for Senior does, but I forgot to write down that number. 🙂

We showed the goats fuzzy (not clipped) because the weather had been so cold and I was very thankful for that decision on show day when it was only 53 degrees with a cold wind. Brrr! Almost everyone wore a coat over their dairy whites and it made for some pretty funny fashions in the show rings.

Caramel and Taffy stand 1st and 2nd in a class of six

We are thrilled that Nibbles’ girls, Caramel and Taffy earned 1st and 2nd place in the Jr. Doeling class of six. Taffy has been retained so she will continue her show career with us. Caramel is going to a new home where she will hopefully continue winning for her new owner, Jennifer.

Clayton milking Hurricane

Ribbons are nice, but we all know it’s really all about the milk! We brought a couple of the milking girls with us which means bringing along the milking stand and milking at the show. Clayton got to try out his new milking stand which is his own design and much lighter and easier to take to shows than the one we used to use. Clayton will be making more over the summer to sell so let us know if you need one!

Champagne Lineup
Champagne stands 1st in a class of nine senior doelings

Champagne ended up being the star for the day with two first place wins in her Sr. Doeling class of nine as well as her Grand Champion win but we are proud of all the girls and are quite happy with Glory and Dolly each placing 3rd in their classes. There was very strong competition in the milking classes and they did well hidden under all their winter fuzziness!
